MLS Recap: Kevin Kratz Hands Atlanta United, Toronto FC's Struggles Continue

Kevin Kratz free-kicks headlined a busy day of MLS action.

ATLANTA (AP)—Miguel Almiron and Kevin Kratz each scored a pair of goals to rally Atlanta United past the Montreal Impact 4-1 on Saturday.

Almiron tied it at 1-all for Atlanta (6-1-1) with a penalty kick in the 70th minute that slipped through despite a deflection off goalkeeper Evan Bush. Chris Duvall conceded the penalty with a handball in the area.

Kratz entered as a substitute in the 74th minute and gave Atlanta the lead in the 78th with a free kick into the left corner.

Almiron connected with Josef Martinez for a give-and-go to make it 3-1 in the 84th minute, and Kratz added another free kick to cap the scoring in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Saphir Taider gave Montreal (2-6-0) the early lead in the 13th minute with a header to finish Duvall's cross.

Philadelphia 3, D.C. 2

CHESTER, Pa. (AP)—Borek Dockal scored the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute, and the Philadelphia Union beat D.C. United 3-2 on Saturday.

Dockal blasted a right-footed shot from a narrow angle past goalkeeper Steve Clark, who reeled backward as the ball went above his head. It was Dockal's first career MLS goal and the Union (2-3-2) held on from there.

Two minutes earlier, Darren Mattocks tied it at 2-all for D.C. United (1-4-2) with a leaping right-footed stab volley to finish Zoltan Stieber's diagonal cross.

Stieber gave United the early lead with a left-footed shot in the seventh minute.

Ilsinho leveled it for the Union at in the 37th minute, and C.J. Sapong gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead in the 60th.

The Union's three goals doubled their total output for the season.

Toronto 2, Chicago 2

TORONTO (AP)—Alan Gordon scored the equalizer in second-half injury time, and the Chicago Fire rallied for a 2-2 draw against Toronto FC on Saturday.

Bastian Schweinsteiger had the other goal for the Fire. Jonathan Osorio and Victor Vazquez scored for Toronto.

With Chicago trailing 2-0, Schweinsteiger's header off Diego Campos' corner kick got past Alex Bono in the 69th minute.

Gordon put home the rebound off Schweinsteiger's shot to pull the Fire even in the dying seconds.

The Reds were playing with a depleted back end, with four defenders unavailable because of injuries. Forward Jozy Altidore was also out after he was injured in Wednesday's CONCACAF Champions League Final.

Toronto (1-4-1) avoided its third consecutive loss in MLS play.

Osorio put Toronto on the board in the eighth minute by tapping in a cross from Sebastian Giovinco for his first goal of the season. The Reds appeared to take a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute when Giovinco one-timed a feed from Nicolas Hasler past goalkeeper Richard Sanchez, but Hasler was ruled offside after a video review.

Vazquez doubled Toronto's lead in the 22nd minute as his chip shot landed just inside the far post.

New England 2, Kansas City 1

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—Teal Bunbury scored his fourth goal in the last five matches and Matt Turner had four saves to help the New England Revolution beat Sporting Kansas City 1-0 on Saturday night.

It was the third shutout of the season for Turner, a 23-year-old who made his first MLS appearance in the season opener and has started every game for New England (4-2-2) this season.

Bunbury, who played for Sporting from 2011-13, rolled it past goalkeeper Tim Melia for a controversial goal in the 44th minute. Juan Agudelo's cross to Diego Fagundez at the top of the area was deflected by defender Roger Espinosa to Bunbury—who appeared to be offside—for the finish from point-blank range.

Sporting KC (5-2-2) had its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Columbus 2, San Jose 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—Mike Grella scored in the 84th minute and the Columbus Crew snapped a four-game winless streak with a 2-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.

Pedro Santos' cross skirted past San Jose's Magnus Eriksson and connected with Grella, who cut it back and slotted one home inside the near post. Grella entered as a substitute in the 65th minute.

Harrison Afful opened the scoring for the Crew (4-3-2) in the 28th minute with a right-footed shot into the top left corner.

Danny Hoesen headed home Florian Jungwirth's deep cross to tie it at 1-all for the Quakes (1-4-2) in the 45th minute.

San Jose defender Yeferson Quintana left the game in the eighth minute with an apparent lower leg injury.

The Quakes extended their winless streak to six games.

Minnesota 2, Houston 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—Ibson Barreto da Silva and Darwin Quintero each scored to help Minnesota United beat the Houston Dynamo 2-1 on Saturday night and end a four-game skid.

Ibson redirected a cross by Miguel Ibarra to give Minnesota (3-5-0) a 2-1 lead in the 70th minute. Ibarra tapped it to Martin on the right side, who led Ibarra toward the goal line where he fed Ibson for the finish just inside the far post.

Houston's Alberth Elis opened the scoring in the 10th when Romell Quioto played a cross to Elis for a sliding goal into a wide-open net.

Quintero converted from the spot to make it 1-1 in the 40th minute after Alejandro Fuenmayor was called for a hand ball in the area.

The Dynamo (2-3-2) outshot Minnesota 19-6.

Minnesota has allowed a goal in 20 consecutive matches, the longest active streak of its kind in MLS.

New York 3, LA 2

CARSON, Calif. (AP)—Alejandro Romero Gamarra scored a late goal and Bradley Wright-Phillips had two assists to help the New York Red Bulls beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 on Saturday night.

Gamarra converted from the spot to give New York a 3-2 lead in the 84th minute after the Galaxy's Dave Romney was called for a hand ball in the area.

Luis Robles had three acrobatic saves, including two diving stops and a leaping deflection, for the Red Bulls (4-3-0).

Daniel Royer put away a cross from Wright-Phillips to open the scoring in the seventh minute. Gamarra, near midfield, lofted a pass to Wright-Phillips on the right side of the box, where he fed a streaking Royer for the tap-in finish into a wide-open net.

Florian Valot doubled the advantage in the 49th, lifting a cross from Wright-Phillips in the top of the net on a breakaway. Gamarra chipped it to Wright-Phillips on the left flank, who tapped it to Valot at the top of the 6-yard box.

L.A.'s Ola Kamara put away a through ball from Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 59th minute and Giovani dos Santos scored in the 66th to make it 2-2.

The Galaxy (3-4-1) have lost three in a row at home.
