With Liverpool suffering an injury crisis at the heart of their defence ahead of the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, it was imperative that summer signing Alisson marshalled his makeshift backline to keep the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman at bay.

The Brazilian did his job. However, the biggest threat to his clean sheet came in the first half at Anfield on Tuesday night as Joel Matip deflected a cross into Alisson's path.

After securing a goalless draw in the first leg, the Reds still have every chance of knocking Bayern out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage. However, defeating the Germans on their own patch won't be easy.

If Loris Karius could be pointed to as the main reason why Jurgen Klopp's side fell short at the final hurdle last season against Real Madrid, then Brazilian shot-stopper Alisson may well and truly be the remedy to wipe out those painful memories.

Following Tuesday night's result at Anfield, in a stat courtesy of Opta, the 26-year-old has now kept eight clean sheets in his last ten home Champions League appearances since the start of last season (five for former club AS Roma, and three for Liverpool).

The record is at least double the total of any other goalkeeper in the competition in that time, and whilst undeniably the defenders in front of him can take huge credit for shutting out the opposition, it is no surprise to see Alisson being an influential figure for both the Giallorossi and the Reds.

With the first leg against the Bavarian giants leaving the tie finely poised, Liverpool will hope Alisson can take his home Champions League form to the Allianz Arena, and help secure a historic triumph in the return fixture on 13 March.
