Union Lose Chance at Top Seed as MLS Playoff Picture Takes Shape on Busy Sunday

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Teal Bunbury and Gustavo Bou scored, Matt Turner had his second consecutive shutout and the New England Revolution beat New York City FC 2-0 on Sunday to earn a playoff spot.

New York City clinched the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs after the game when the Columbus Crew beat the Philadelphia Union 2-0.

Turner finished with six saves, including a diving stop in the 54th minute, a leaping one-handed save in the 63rd and another diving save in the 85th.

Teal Bunbury gave the Revolution a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute. Penilla cut back to evade a defender on the right side and then rolled a pass to a charging Bunbury who chipped a bending first-timer into the corner of the net.

Bou lobbed a shot from 30 yards outs over the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Sean Johnson into the net to cap the scoring in the 89th.

New England (11-10-12) has just one loss in its last nine games.

New York City (17-7-10) had 60.4% possession and had twice as many shots on target (six) than the Revolution.

Vancouver Whitecaps 4, LA Galaxy 3

CARSON, Calif. — Michaell Chirinos scored in stoppage time and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 4-3 on Sunday.

Hwang In-Beom, on the counterattack, patiently approached goalkeeper Matt Lampson before rolling a pass to Chirinos for an empty-netter in the third minute of injury time.

The Galaxy (16-14-3), who had their three-game win streak snapped, fell from second to fourth in the Western Conference standings. Los Angeles has a one-point lead, with one regular-season game to play, over Real Salt Lake for the final home match in the knock-out round of the playoffs.

Doneil Henry gave the Whitecaps (8-15-10) a 1-0 lead when he put away a corner kick by Hwang in the 20th minute. Cristian Pavon wrapped a left-footed cross around defender Jasser Khmiri to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who bounced a first-timer from near the spot into the net to tie it in the 23rd.

Theo Bair, a 20-year-old homegrown who signed with the Whitecaps on July 17, scored his second MLS goal to give Vancouver a 2-1 lead in the 41st minute. A shot by Chirinos deflected off Bair, who then side-netted a slow roller with the outside of his foot. Los Angeles tied it again when Uriel Antuna scored in the 58th. Jonathan dos Santos lofted a pass from near midfield to Antuna at the top of the box for the finish.

Tosaint Ricketts gave the Whitecaps the lead again in the 64th minute. Erik Godoy chipped a first-timer from the right side to the top of the 6-yard box where Ricketts put away a header but Chris Pontius made it 3-all in the 86th.

Columbus Crew 2, Philadelphia Union 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Pedro Santos had a goal and an assist in the second half and the Columbus Crew beat the Philadelphia Union 2-0 on Sunday night to hand the Eastern Conference's top seed to New York City FC.

Youness Mokhtar's first career goal, set up by Luis Diaz and Santos, put Columbus up in the 69th minute. Four minutes later, Santos' 11th goal doomed Philadelphia, which fell six points behind NYCFC and into a tie for second with Atlanta United, which holds the tiebreaker with one game to play.

Eloy Room made three saves for his first shutout.

The game was delayed by almost an hour as lightning arrived with the start of halftime.

On the attack, the Union (16-10-7) failed to get a strong shot and off the block the Crew (10-15-8) quickly countered. Speedy Luis Diaz dribbled the ball across midfield on the right before sending it middle to Santos, who put it to Mokhtar in the box left. Mokhtar counted back into the middle and beat three defenders with a low drive past Andre Blake.

Off a corner four minutes later, a Philadelphia defender's header put the ball straight up in the air and Blake punched it out of the box. Santos pounced on the loose ball sending a four-bouncer through a crowd of players past the diving Blake.

New York Red Bulls 0, D.C. United 0

HARRISON, N.J. — Bill Hamid made a spectacular save in the 61st minute to highlight his 12th shutout and D.C. United played the New York Red Bulls to a 0-0 draw on Sunday to maintain position for home-field advantage in a possible playoff rematch.

D.C. ran its unbeaten streak and shutout streak to four matches, its longest since opening the season with three straight shutouts. Hamid was in goal for both streaks.

The result, combined with Toronto's 2-2 draw in Chicago, means D.C. (13-10-10) stays in fourth place in the East standings, one point ahead of the Red Bulls (14-13-6), and only needs to beat last-place Cincinnati next weekend to host an opening playoff game. The Red Bulls are one point up on Toronto.

A minute before Hamid's save, Tom Barlow sent a header to goal that was headed away by defender Frederic Brillant. Then Hamid sprawled to his right to stop Cristian Casseres Jr.'s volley off a corner kick.

Luis Robles did not make a save in earning his third-straight and eighth overall shutout for the Red Bulls, who play their finale at Montreal.

Real Salt Lake 2, Houston Dynamo 1

SANDY, Utah — Jefferson Savarino and Corey Baird scored and Real Salt Lake beat the Houston Dynamo 2-1 on Sunday to clinch a playoff berth.

Real Salt Lake (15-13-5) snapped a three-game winless streak and, heading into next Sunday's regular-season finale, can finish as high as the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

Savarino put away a side-netter from just outside the area to give Real Salt Lake a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute.

Baird stole the ball at midfield, raced downfield and blasted a right-footer from the top of the area that bounced off the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Tyler Deric into the net to give Real Salt Lake a 1-0 lead in the opening seconds.

The Dynamo's Tomas Martinez tied it in the 32nd minute. Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando parried a shot by Alberth Elis but Martinez ran onto the rebound and, from the end line, slipped a side-netter between the Rimando and the post.

Houston (11-18-4) lost for the eighth time in its last 11 matches.

Montreal Impact 1, Atlanta United 1

MONTREAL — Julian Gressel scored for Atlanta United in a 1-1 tie with Montreal on Sunday that ended the Impact's playoff hopes.

Gressel scored in the 53rd minute, and Bojan Krkic tied it for Montreal in the 81st.

Defending champion Atlanta (17-12-4) has already clinched a playoff spot.

Clement Diop made five saves in his MLS debut for Montreal (11-17-5). Evan Bush was on the bench for the first time since the end of the 2017 season, a streak of 66 consecutive league matches.

Brad Guzan made three saves for Atlanta.

Chicago Fire 2, Toronto FC 2

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Omar Gonzalez had a goal and an assist to help Toronto to a 2-2 tie with the Chicago Fire on Sunday.

Toronto (12-10-11), which has already qualified for the postseason, can clinch a home game in the knock-out round with a win, and losses by New York and D.C. United, in next Sunday's regular-season finale.

Chicago (9-12-12), which had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped, was eliminated from playoff contention.

Gonzalez headed home a corner kick Alejandro Pozuelo in the 80th minute to make it 2-2.

Jozy Altidore gave Toronto a 1-0 lead in the 59th, stumbling after contact with a defender and then rolling a shot from the top of the area through the legs of goalkeeper Kenneth Kronholm.

Aleksandar Katai ran onto through ball by Przemyslaw Frankowski behind the defense on the left side and rolled a shot between defender Gonzalez and goalkeeper Quentin Westberg to tie it in the 68th minute and Fabian Herbers headed home a cross by Nicolas Gaitan to give the Fire a 2-1 lead in the 77th.

FC Cincinnati 1, Orlando City 1

CINCINNATI — Benji Michel scored a minute into extra time to give Orlando City a 1-1 tie with FC Cincinnati on Sunday.

The late goal was the 75th conceded by expansion Cincinnati, the most in MLS history. The previous record was established by Orlando City last season. Orlando City was eliminated from the playoff chase.

Cincinnati (6-22-5), sporting the worst record in the league, led from the 40th minute when Allan Cruz picked up his seventh goal of the year. The setup started with a good feed into the box from Joseph-Claude Gyau to Emmanuel Ledesma, who ran onto it at the end line and dropped it back out front to wide open Cruz.

Early in extra time, Nani got the ball on the end line and crossed it to the far post where Dom Dwyer got a head on it to send it straight to Michel for the easy score, his fourth.

Brian Rowe made six saves for Orlando City (9-14-10), while Przemyslaw Tyton had two for Cincinnati.
