Nothing less than three points will suffice for the United States when it travels to Canada on Friday hoping to recover after a loss to this foe for the first time in 34 years last time out.

The inaugural CONCACAF Nations League has already thrown up a surprise in Group A, but Canada hopes to lock down first place in shocking fashion with a result at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando.

Alphonso Davies and Lucas Cavallini scored to give the hosts a clean victory when these teams clashed in Toronto in October, from which Canada gained a tremendous boost in confidence.

In doing so, John Herdman’s side not only broke a winless run against the United States dating back to April 1985, but it also ensures that even a point in Florida will be enough to clinch first.

Gregg Berhalter lamented his side’s apparent lack of desire when these teams met one month ago, an indication perhaps that the Nations League isn’t of such high importance to some U.S. stars. The United States coach is clearly treating his task and the possible threat of an early Nations League exit seriously. Berhalter called up 19 players for an international pre-camp earlier in November and has been boosted by some well-timed returns from injury.

Christian Pulisic will hope for better results this time around against Canada having scored five goals and recorded two assists in his last six games for Chelsea. Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin is fit following groin surgery earlier this season. He’s out to build momentum after scoring his first goal of the campaign in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth.

Canada will be boosted by plenty of Major League Soccer stars, some of whom played on Sunday when the Seattle Sounders beat Toronto FC 3-1 to lift the 2019 MLS Cup. Davies has dazzled mostly at left-back for Bayern Munich this season, but the Vancouver Whitecaps product looks poised to return to attack alongside Gent’s Jonathan David.
