Team Vestas Wind returns to Volvo Ocean Race

ALICANTE, Spain (AP) The crew of a boat competing in the Volvo Ocean Race that ran aground on a reef in the Indian Ocean is on its way to Mauritius after a two-day wait.

Team Vestas Wind was traveling at 19 knots when it slammed into the reef on the St Brandon archipelago on Saturday. The crew abandoned it in the early hours of the following morning.

Crew members were then picked up by a coastguard boat from the nearby Ile du Sud, a near-deserted islet. They boarded a fishing vessel on Tuesday and were due to arrive in Mauritius on Wednesday.

They will then fly to Abu Dhabi, the starting point of the next leg of the race on Jan. 3.

Organizers said the team was hoping the boat could be repaired.
