Friedrich leads German sweep in 4-man bobsled World Cup

ALTENBERG, Germany (AP) Francesco Friedrich led a German sweep of the podium in the opening four-man bobsled World Cup of the season on Sunday.

Pushed by Martin Putze, Jannis Baecker and Thorsten Margis, the two-man world champion posted runs of 55.81 and 55.98 seconds for a combined time of 1:51.79 to edge Nico Walther's team by 0.09 seconds.

Walther, with Marko Huebenbecker, Christian Poser and Eric Franke, had the fastest first run of 55.65, but 56.23 in the second for a total of 1:51.88 allowed Friedrich snatch his first win in four-man. Friedrich also won the two-man race on his home track on Saturday.

Four-man world champion Maximilian Arndt, pushed by Kevin Kuske, Ben Heber and Kevin Korona, was third with runs of 55.75 and 56.28 for 1:52.03.
