Buffalo defensive line coach John Scott Jr. has accepted a job as assistant defensive line coach with the NFL’s New York Jets, according to sources.

The move ends Scott’s tenure with the Bulls after just over a month. He had previously been Texas Tech’s defensive line coach for two seasons before resigning in early December.

Prior to Scott’s stint in Lubbock, he coached defensive line and special teams at Georgia Southern for three seasons. In 2009, he was defensive line coach at Missouri State and coached the same position the year before at his alma mater, Western Carolina.

He was also defensive ends and outside linebackers coach at Western Carolina from 2006-07. He coached defensive line at Norfolk State in 2005.

Scott, 39, got his start in coaching in 2001 at West Davidson High School in Lexington, N.C. as a defensive line coach before spending three years as a graduate assistant at Louisiana-Lafayette. He was a defensive lineman at Western Carolina who went on to play in the AF2 and CFL.

Scott joins new Jets coach Todd Bowles, who was hired last month after spending the last two seasons as defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals. Former Jets coach Rex Ryan was fired in late December after compiling a 46-50 record in six seasons, which included a 4-12 mark this past year.

Scott’s hiring means new Buffalo coach Lance Leipold will be looking for his third defensive line coach in as many months. Prior to Scott, retained Bulls defensive line coach Chris Cosh left in December to become defensive coordinator at North Texas.

Leipold, who was hired at Buffalo in December, won his sixth NCAA Division III national championship this past season at Wisconsin-Whitewater. In his eight seasons at the school, he had a record of 109-6 and in October became the fastest coach in NCAA history to reach 100 wins.
