West Virginia should get its first real test of the season against Maryland after beating Georgia Southern and Liberty by a combined 68 points in its first two games. Quarterback Skyler Howard has a rating of 199.9 after going 37 for 51 with 622 yards and five touchdowns in his first two outings. Receiver Shelton Gibson has six receptions for 211 yards, good for a 35.2 yards per catch average.

Maryland rebounded from a 48–27 loss to Bowling Green two weeks ago with a 35–17 win over South Florida. Quarterback Caleb Rowe threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns in that game, but also was picked off three times. Rowe has thrown five interceptions compared to just four touchdowns this season. Junior Perry Hills has also played well this season, going 27 for 51 with 306 yards and four touchdowns.
