Receivers Johnell Barnes and Terrence Alls and linebacker Chris Holmes have been dismissed from the Duke football team after failing to meet team standards, head coach David Cutcliffe announced on Tuesday.

“This is, without doubt, the most difficult thing teams and coaches face. This is not a reaction to anything that has occurred during the last couple weeks. This has been something that we have worked very hard with these young men to continue to understand what's expected of them,” Cutcliffe said in a team statement. “We have standards in this program that we’re committed to. When we’re recruiting, we let them and their parents know these things. We’re responsible to the parents and the players we have here currently. We’re going to uphold those standards and work with everybody we can to give people opportunities to be successful.”

The Blue Devils will lose one of their best receivers in Barnes as he ranks second on the team with 34 pass receptions and 411 receiving yards in 10 games this fall. He has three touchdowns and 865 yards in his three years at Duke.

Alls played in four games for the Blue Devils after serving a six-game suspension. He caught six passes for 56 yards in his four games.

Holmes appeared in six games this year and registered four tackles.

Duke plays at Virginia on Saturday.
