Virginia Tech secondary coach Torrian Gray is being retained by new Hokies coach Justin Fuente, according to a source.

Gray, 41, has held his position at Virginia Tech since 2006 and had the title of defensive passing game coordinator the past three seasons. He was assistant defensive backs coach for the NFL’s Chicago Bears from 2004-05 and spent the three seasons before that as Connecticut’s defensive backs coach.

A Lakeland, Fla. native, Gray got his start in coaching as Maine’s defensive backs coach from 2000-02. He played safety for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings from 1997-99 and for Virginia Tech from 1992-96.

Fuente was hired last month from Memphis, where he had a 26-23 record in four seasons, including a 9-3 mark this season. He transformed the downtrodden program he inherited into a Top 25 team.

Fuente replaces long-time Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, who last month announced his retirement at the conclusion of this season. Beamer has a 235-120-2 record in his 29 seasons with the Hokies and will coach them in a bowl game.
