The 4-year-old colt broke his left front cannon bone in the backstretch of the Jaipur Invitational at the park in Elmont, N.Y. The New York Racing Association told the Associated Press that Helwan was pulled up with approximately 3 1/2 furlongs remaining in the six-furlong race.

Jockey Jose Ortiz, who was not injured, pulled Helwan up after the injury and walked off the track once attendants arrived. The horse was euthanized behind a screen on the track.

Helwan was owned by Al Shaqab Racing and trained by Chad Brown. The horse last raced in France in October and won three of his eight lifetime races.

Channel Marker won the $300,000 Jaipur Invitational, one of several undercard stakes before the 147th Belmont Stakes, scheduled for 6:50 ET Saturday. American Pharoah will attempt to be the first horse in 37 years to win the Triple Crown following his victories at the Preakness and Kentucky Derby.
