St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina underwent a second surgery on his injured left thumb and will likely miss most of spring training, reports MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch.

Molina tore a ligament in his thumb on Sept. 20 and missed the remainder of the regular season but returned in time for the playoffs. He left Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs after aggravating the injury, and he didn’t play in St. Louis' series-ending Game 4 loss.

Molina, 33, underwent surgery in mid-October, but according to Langosch, the procedure was unsuccessful.

Molina hit .270 with four home runs, 61 RBIs and a .660 OPS in 136 games last season and was named to the National League All-Star team for a seventh straight year. He also won his eighth consecutive Gold Glove at catcher.
