Falcons' Season To Date

Shocking the betting world, Atlanta (2-7) went into Mercedes-Benz Stadium and upset New Orleans 26-9 as a heavy underdog last week. Ball control was huge in the win, as the Falcons had four possessions of 10 or more plays. That included a 17-play drive that resulted in a first-quarter touchdown. Atlanta is playing back-to-back road games.

Falcons' Betting Record: ATS 3-6-0 OVER/UNDER 3-6-0

Falcons' Leaders on Offense

QB Matt Ryan: 2,352 pass yards with 17 TD and 9 INT

*RB Brian Hill: 125 total yards with 2 TD

WR Julio Jones: 791 receiving yards with 4 TD

*TE: Luke Stocker: 34 receiving yards with 0 TD

* Hill and Stocker are both starting due to injuries.

Panthers’ Season to Date

Though still alive in the NFC playoff race, the road is a lot tougher for Carolina (5-4) after it lost 24-16 to Green Bay last week. Weather was a factor, so the Panthers will be happy to return to sunny Charlotte for this match. Atlanta can expect heavy doses of RB Christian McCaffrey, as a runner and receiver out of the backfield, in this contest.

Panthers’ Betting Record: ATS 5-4-0 OVER/UNDER 6-3-0

Panthers’ Leaders on Offense

QB Kyle Allen: 1,598 pass yards with 10 TD and 5 INT

RB Christine McCaffrey: 1,385 total yards with 14 TD

WR DJ Moore: 684 receiving yards with 1 TD

TE Greg Olsen: 429 receiving yards with 2 TD

Panthers vs. Falcons Recent History Favors Atlanta

As NFC South Division rivals, this is the first of two meetings between these teams this year. Atlanta won and covered both meetings last season, as the Falcons posted a 31-24 victory at home in Week 2 and a 24-10 win on the road during Week 16 action. Atlanta is also on a 6-1 roll, straight up and against the spread, versus Carolina.

Falcons vs. Panthers Final Thoughts and Pick

While their win last week was huge, it wasn’t all good news as the Falcons lost RB Devonta Freeman and TE Austin Hopper to injuries. Those are key players who QB Matt Ryan depends on due to a lack of protection from the weak Atlanta offensive line. The Saints sacked Ryan just once but the Panthers lead the NFL with 36 QB takedowns.

Carolina is better at defending the pass than the run, so facing a depleted Atlanta backfield is a break for the Panthers. The Falcons losing Hooper is tough too, as he was the Falcons’ leading receiver with 67 receptions and six TDs. Carolina has won and covered three straight home games, and it will make it four in a row here.

Pick: Panthers -5.5

Season Record: 1-12
