The NCAA has granted the Mount Saint Joseph University women's basketball team a waiver to move the date of its season opener up two weeks to allow a terminally ill player to play.
Lauren Hill, a freshman forward with the Lions, committed to play for Division III Mount Saint Joseph last October. A month and a half later she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, according to WKRC.
Hill began chemotherapy and radiation treatments but kept playing with her high school basketball team.
"I never gave up for a second even when I got a terminal diagnosis; never thought about sitting back and not living life anymore," Hill told WKRC.
An MRI in September revealed her condition had worsened, and doctors told her she wouldn't live past December. But Lauren wanted to play one college game, so her school petitioned the NCAA to move its Nov. 15 season opener against Hiram College. The waiver was granted and the game will be played on Nov. 2 instead. Hill will wear No. 22.
