College Football Top 25 Review
LSU (7-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) continued its early march, winning its seventh straight game by double digits. Jarrett Lee threw for two touchdowns, while Spencer Ware (pictured) caught one and ran for another. Matt Simms was 6 of 20 for 128 yards and two interceptions in his first start for Tennessee (3-3, 0-3).
Trent Richardson (pictured) rushed for 183 yards with a career-high four touchdowns as Alabama (7-0, 4-0 SEC) beat Mississippi (2-4, 0-3) for the eighth straight time. The Crimson Tide outgained the Rebels 641 yards to 144.
Landry Jones (left) got the offense into high gear, throwing for 363 yards and three touchdowns for the Sooners, who only led 27-17 at halftime. Ryan Broyles, who already had two games with 13 or more receptions, caught 13 more for 217 yards and two touchdowns as the Sooners improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big 12.
Quarterback Russell Wilson added a touchdown reception to his impressive running and passing resume for the season when he caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from running back Montee Ball. Ball rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns in addition to his touchdown pass as Wisconsin improved to 6-0.
Kellen Moore (pictured) threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns, Doug Martin ran for 200 yards and three scores and Tyler Shoemaker caught nine passes for 180 yards and two TDs as Boise State (6-0, 1-0 Mountain West) routed Colorado State (3-3, 1-1) in its conference opener. Moore, Martin and Shoemaker were lifted for reserves in the third quarter of the blowout.
Jeremy Smith (pictured) paced Oklahoma State (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) with touchdown runs of 30 and 74 yards, totaling 140 yards on the ground. Justin Gilbert tied a school record with his fourth kickoff return for a touchdown. Texas (4-2, 1-2) started freshman David Ash for the first time, and he played every snap. Case McCoy and Ash had been splitting time the previous three games.
Andrew Luck (12) was pretty much able to do whatever he wanted, completing 23-of-36 passes for 336 yards and four touchdowns as the Cardinal improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Pac-12. Stepfan Tayloradded 100 rushing yards for Stanford, which plays host to Washington in a key conference test next Saturday night.
Tajh Boyd threw four touchdown passes, freshman Sammy and No. 8 Clemson rallied from an 18-point deficit. The Tigers (7-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed 35-17 in the third quarter before storming back behind Boyd, who went 26-for-38 for 270 yards as the catalyst of an offense that amassed 576 yards. Andre Ellington (23) rushed for a career-high 212 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers, who have scored at least 35 points in all but one game this season.
Darron Thomas (left) threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns before he left with left leg injury as Oregon (5-1, 3-0 Pac-12) survived. It was the second straight game the Ducks have lost a key player to injury. Running back LaMichael James dislocated his elbow in Oregon's last outing, a 43-15 win over California. Brock Osweiler threw for 291 yards and two scores for the Sun Devils (5-2, 3-1), who have lost seven straight to the Ducks.
Offensive tackle Jared McGaha hoists the Paul Bunyan Trophy, which now belongs to Michigan State for the fourth straight year after the Spartans defense held the Wolverines to 223 yards below their season average.
In a game with a combined 11 completions, Virginia (4-2, 1-1 ACC) rode running backs Perry Jones and Kevin Parks to the tune of 235 yards and a touchdown to blemish the Yellow Jackets. Tim Smith (pictured) added a receiving touchdown. Georgia Tech (6-1, 3-1 ACC) quarterback Tevin Washington didn't complete a pass until the third quarter and finished 2 for 8 for 24 yards and two interceptions, though he did run for 115 yards and two scores.
Marcus Lattimore (left) scored on this run, but it was one of his few highlights as he finished with 39 yards before leaving with a knee injury.
Daniel Herron (pictured) ran for 114 yards and a touchdown in his first game since the Sugar Bowl as Ohio State handed Illinois its first loss and took the Illibuck trophy. Herron missed Ohio State's (4-3, 2-1 Big Ten) first six games due to NCAA suspensions. True freshman Braxton Miller started at quarterback but didn't complete a pass until the fourth quarter. Nathan Scheelhaase was 20 of 34 for 169 yards, two interceptions and one touchdown for Illinois (6-1, 2-1).
Collin Klein ran for three touchdowns and threw for another as Kansas State came from behind. Tyler Lockett returned a kickoff 100 yards early in the second quarter for the Wildcats, who are undefeated after six games for the first time since 2000. The Wildcat defense came to play in the second half, limiting the Red Raiders to two field goals.
Logan Thomas accounted for four total touchdowns, including Jarrett Boykin's second-quarter stretch into the end zone, as Virginia Tech (6-1, 2-1 ACC) erased a 10-0 deficit to win easily. For Wake Forest (4-2, 3-1), Ted Stachitas replaced Tanner Price at quarterback for the final drive.
Ryan Tannehill threw a career-high six touchdown passes and outplayed Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III as the Aggies trounced the Bears. Texas A&M rebounded after back-to-back losses to Oklahoma State and Arkansas.
It didn't matter who was running the Florida offense on this night. Jacoby Brissett (left) and Jeff Driskel combined to complete 14-of-28 passes for 121 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. Yet, the Gators were still leading 7-6 entering the fourth quarter. Onterio McCalebb's late scoring run, along with Cody Parkey's 42-yard field goal, accounted for the final score.
