NCAA president Mark Emmert's salary was $1.7 million in 2012

NCAA president Mark Emmert made a little more than $1.7 million during the 2012 calendar year, according to tax returns obtained by USA Today. 

Emmert's base salary was $1,263,356, but he also received a little over $185,000 in other reportable compensation. Additionally, he received $235,000 in retirement and deferred compensation. 

The NCAA is a non-profit, which means it must file annual tax returns containing the compensation for officers, directors and highly-paid employees. 

Emmert recently testified in the O'Bannon v. NCAA case and faced direct questions from Judge Claudia Wilken. In his testimony, Emmert defended the definition of amateurism and expressed the NCAA's desire to protect student-athletes from commercial interests. 

The USA Today report also notes that NCAA Chief Operating Officer Jim Isch also cleared $1 million, making $1.01 million in 2012.

Emmert has served as NCAA president since November 2010.
