Iowa State names Sam Richardson starting quarterback
Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads announced Monday that Sam Richardson will start at quarterback in the team's opener against North Dakota State.
Richardson, a redshirt junior, beat out redshirt sophomore Grant Rohach for the job. He was named the starter over Rohach last season as well and went on to start eight games, throwing for 1,397 yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Rhoads benched Richardson in favor of Rohach for the final four games last season. Rohach threw for 958 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions in leading the Cyclones to a 2-2 record.

"[Richardson's] had a tremendous fall camp," Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads told reporters on Monday. "He's been very much in control of our offense and in control of himself. His understanding of scheme and decision-making has really grown in the last two weeks."
Iowa State went 3-9 last season. The team has been installing a new offense under former Kansas head coach Mark Mangino, who's entering his first season as offensive coordinator for the Cyclones.
