Miami (OH)'s Autry Denson expected to become South Florida RBs coach
Miami (Ohio) running backs coach Autry Denson is expected to accept the same position at South Florida, according to a source.
This past season was Denson’s first year at Miami (Ohio) after three years coaching running backs at Bethune-Cookman. He would be a savvy hire by Bulls coach Willie Taggart to help replace the South Florida recruiting ties the Bulls lost when former running backs coach Telly Lockette departed last month for Oregon State.
A Davie, Fla., native, the 38-year-old Denson was head coach at Pope John Paul II High School in Boca Raton, Fla., in 2010 before joining the college ranks. The all-time leading rusher at Notre Dame, he was a seventh-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1998.
Denson spent four seasons in the NFL and later played in the Canadian Football League for a season. He has also participated in the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship.
South Florida went 4-8 this season, doubling its win total from Taggart’s first season. The Bulls will return 14 starters from this season, including their top four tacklers and rising sophomore running back Marlon Mack, the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Year.
