Iowa State starting defensive lineman Mitchell Meyers has been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, head coach Paul Rhodes announced on Thursday.

Team physician Dr. Marc Shulman said Meyers will begin treatment on Friday and said the diagnoses "is very treatable with a 90 percent curable rate."

In a statement, Meyers said he will stay in Ames, Iowa, for his treatment so that he can be around his teammates and stay in school.

"I want to thank everyone for the support and encouragement I have received," said Meyers. "I am determined to embrace the process and fight this with a positive attitude.

I have the greatest teammates in the world. It’s been humbling to see their care and words of encouragement. I would love to be able to play football at Iowa State again, but right now my focus is on my health."

A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Meyers is a redshirt junior. He started all 12 games for the Cyclones in 2014 and has been named First Team Academic All-Big 12 in each of the last two years.
