Former Utah cornerback Dominique Hatfield charged with assault
Former Utah cornerback Dominique Hatfield was charged with misdemeanor assault Monday as the result of an alleged fight last month, according to the Associated Press.
The incident occurred at a party on July 5, one day before Hatfield was suspended indefinitely by head coach Kyle Whittingham for being charged with robbery on July 1. Hatfield was out on bond at the time. Hatfield was dismissed from the team on July 10 after Whittingham said the team “developed further concerns about [his] off-field behavior.”
At the July 5 party, according to a probable cause statement obtained by the Salt Lake Tribune, a man asked Hatfield not to smoke marijuana, at which point Hatfield and several other unknown individuals proceeded to beat the man up. The man was left with cuts and bruises on his face, shoulder and back.
The robbery charges were dropped on July 16 and a prosecutor told the Tribune that his office was likely to re-file lesser charges, though it has yet to do so.
Hatfield, who was a rising junior, began his career as a receiver but switched to defensive back early last season. He started 10 games at cornerback, recording 32 tackles and an interception.
