Oklahoma's Hatari Byrd apologizes after middle finger incident
Oklahoma Sooners free safety Hatari Byrd apologized Monday after he gave the middle finger to Tennessee Vols fans following his team's 31-24 overtime win on Saturday.
“I apologize to my family, the fans, coaches and my teammates for what happened after the game,” Byrd tweeted Monday night. “I reacted without thinking. That's not me.”
After the Sooners came from 17 points down to beat the Vols on Saturday, Byrd was captured on camera flipping Tennessee fans the middle finger.
Sooners head coach Bob Stoops told NewsOK.com on Monday that Byrd will be disciplined for his actions.
“[His] actions in the heat of the moment and all emotionally are absolutely inappropriate, and they'll be dealt with in an educational manner. ... We'll handle it internally. [...] There's no excuse...[but] they play out there in a controlled rage. You just don't go out there and be all mild-mannered and it all works out for you,” Stoops said.
Byrd was cited in January for possession of drug paraphernalia and alcohol.
