North Carolina linebacker Joe Jackson is quitting football as a result of a neck injury he suffered during the team's season opener, according to the Associated Press.

The school made the announcement in a statement, and Jackson addressed the tough decision.

“After talking with my family and the UNC doctors, I have decided it is in my best interest to stop playing football,” says Jackson. “It was a difficult decision and I appreciate the support of my teammates and coaches.”

Jackson was named a starting outside linebacker before the season by head coach Larry Fedora. He played eight games as a backup linebacker last season.
