Jacksonville State QB Jenkins arrested

(STATS) - Jacksonville State's All-America quarterback Eli Jenkins was arrested early Wednesday morning after police responded to a call of domestic violence at an apartment complex on the university's Alabama campus.

Jenkins, the 21-year-old standout who recently helped Jacksonville State to a national runner-up finish in the FCS, was charged with domestic violence third degree, a Class A misdemeanor, following the incident with a 22-year-old woman. He was scheduled to be held in the city jail for at least 24 hours under state law involving domestic violence, the Anniston Star reported.

"There was a male (and) female arguing and fighting and someone overheard it and called it in," JSU police chief Shawn Giddy told AL.com. "Officers responded, investigated and an arrest was made based on the result of that investigation."

In a statement to STATS, Jacksonville State's interim athletic director Greg Seitz said, "The Jacksonville State Department of Athletics is aware of the situation involving quarterback Eli Jenkins. We are in the process of gathering information on the incident and it would be inappropriate to make any other statements until we have more details."

Jenkins, from Birmingham, just completed his redshirt junior season. Jacksonville State went 13-2 and won the Ohio Valley Conference title as he captured the league's offensive player of the year award and was a STATS FCS All-America first-team selection.

The Gamecocks fell 37-10 to North Dakota State in the national championship game in Frisco, Texas.

Jenkins, a 2 1/2-year starter, has one season of eligibility remaining.

He is the father of one son, Kaydon Maurice Jenkins.
