UNLV will hire New Mexico State head coach Marvin Menzies, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reports.
Goodman reports the two sides have verbally agreed to a deal. Menzies was reportedly the runner-up in UNLV’s initial off-season coaching search. The school’s first choice, Chris Beard, departed for Texas Tech just a week after joining the Running Rebels from Arkansas-Little Rock.
Menzies, 54, has gone 198–111 in nine seasons as head coach at New Mexico State. He was previously an assistant at UNLV for one season, 2004–05 under Lon Kruger. He has won five straight regular-season or postseason WAC titles with the Aggies and led the team to the NCAA tournament five times.
Beard left UNLV after the Texas Tech job opened up, with Tubby Smith headed to Memphis to replace Josh Pastner, who took the job at Georgia Tech.
