Four-star safety Derrick Tucker commits to Texas A&M
Four-star safety Derrick Tucker announced his verbal commitment to Texas A&M on Friday, making him the first recruit to commit to the Aggies since an assistant coach directed a Twitter rant at recruits last week.
"I honestly couldn't have made it thus far without my family having by back through everything," Tucker said on Twitter. "I also want to thank my coaches for always supporting me, believing in me, and pushing me to the best of my ability in the classroom, and on the field."
Scout.com ranks Tucker the No. 7 safety in the class of 2017, and No. 2 at the position in Texas. He is just barely outside the top 100 overall nationally. The 6'2", 194-pound defensive back chose Texas A&M over Alabama, TCU, Texas and Houston, among others.
Last week, two players decommitted from Texas A&M and one recruit withdrew interest in the midst of a series of tweets sent by wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead.
The rant began shortly after five-star Tate Martell, Scout.com's top quarterback in the class of 2017, announced his decommitment. Four-star receiver Mannie Netherly then tweeted his decommitment, saying he no longer wanted to play for Moorehead. Uncommitted four-star receiver Tyjon Lindsey tweeted he would no longer consider signing with Texas A&M.
Moorehead apologized for his comments the following morning.
The Aggies now have six commitments in their 2017 class.
