Report: Baylor DC Phil Bennett will become interim head coach

Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will accept the Bears’ interim head coaching job, reports ESPN’s Jeanine Edwards.
Baylor fired Art Briles on Thursday amid the controversy over the school’s mishandling of rape allegations involving football players. A Texas Monthly story last August and extensive reporting by ESPN’s Outside the Lines had detailed a number of instances in which Baylor officials and coaches were aware of sexual assault allegations against players but did not pursue disciplinary action.
Bennett has been Baylor’s defensive coordinator since 2011. Previously, Bennett served as head coach at SMU from 2002 to ’07, and then as Pittsburgh’s defensive coordinator from 2008 to ’10. Bennett also served as the Panthers’ interim coach for one game at the end of 2010 season.

As a head coach, Bennett has a 19–52 career record.
