Purdue's Painter agrees to extension

Purdue Boilermakers coach Matt Painter has agreed to a three-year contract extension through the 2021-22 season. He told the Indianapolis Star in a text message that the deal may not be finalized until the Aug. 25-26 meeting of the Purdue Board of Trustees.

While Painter said he would not comment on the extension until it is finalized, he was due to earn $2.45 million for the 2016-16 under his current contract, with potential bonuses for his team's academic performance and Big Ten and national tournament achievements.

Painter, 45, signed an extension in 2011 after being pursued heavily by Missouri. After consecutive losing seasons, the Boilermakers have reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons.

Painter has a 263-139 record in 11 seasons at Purdue, and has led the Boilermakers to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including last season's disappointing first-round loss to Arkansas-Little Rock. Painter is a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year.

The Indianapolis Star reported that if his extension includes the same contract language as his current deal, Painter's buyout should he be fired without cause would be in above $14 million.
