Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall charges refs at exhibition
Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall charged at two referees after he was ejected during an exhibition game in Montreal.
During the game against McGill University, which Wichita State won 77–71, Marshall grew angry after he was ejected in the third period for expressing his frustration with the officiating, especially after Wichita State center Rauno Nurger sustained a concussion on a play in which he was fouled and later received three stitches on his chin.
Cell phone video then showed Marshall leaving the sideline to confront the officials, with several players, an assistant and director of operations Dominic Okon trying to stop him. Marshall then began pointing, yelling and came close to an official's face and was eventually escorted off the court by Wichita State staff.
The school announced Wednesday that Marshall had been suspended for the final game of the tour.
“I’m definitely not proud of my reaction to that situation, but at some point your players have to know you’re going to stand up for them and you’ve got some fight in you,” Marshall told the Wichita Eagle. “Once I reacted, I said, ‘I might as well get my money’s worth.’
“Perhaps. I wasn't going to do anything physical, but I wanted to make sure they understood what I felt was happening was incorrect and wrong.”
Marshall will be entering his 10th season at Wichita State and has a 230–85 record at the school. The Shockers have made the NCAA Tournament in each of the past five seasons.
