STORRS, Conn. (AP) UConn says freshman point guard Alterique Gilbert will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will miss the rest of the season.
Gilbert suffered the injury during the Huskies' win at Loyola Marymount on Nov. 17. The school says the surgery will be scheduled in the next few weeks to repair the damage and tighten the muscles in the shoulder. The recovery time is expected to be about six months.
The Huskies (2-4) also announced that freshman forward Mamadou Diarra will redshirt this season to undergo treatment for a painful knee condition. The 6-foot-8 Diarra has not played for UConn because of the condition, known as patellofemoral syndrome.
UConn already had lost starting swingman Terry Larrier, who tore the ACL his left knee in the Huskies' loss to Oklahoma State in Hawaii on Nov. 21. The sophomore transfer from VCU is expected to undergo surgery in the next few days.
