Morgan State Expected to Hire Tyrone Wheatley as Head Coach

Wheatley was an original member of Jim Harbaugh's staff at Michigan.

(STATS) — Morgan State is expected to name Tyrone Wheatley Sr. as its next head coach, according to reports Tuesday.

FootballScoop first reported the impending hiring at the MEAC school.

Wheatley, 47, played running back at Michigan and then for 10 seasons in the NFL with the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders. He has served as running backs coach at Ohio Northern, Eastern Michigan, Syracuse and then his alma mater under Jim Harbaugh as well as in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars, who did not retain him in 2018 after his second season.

Wheatley's son, Tyrone Jr., played on the FCS level as a tight end at Stony Brook last season, but left the CAA program afterward.

Morgan State went 4–7, including a big win at North Carolina A&T, under interim coach Ernest Jones last season, but the school announced a national search on Nov. 19.
