Both the Irish (7-2) and Midshipmen (7-1) are bowl eligible, but this game arguably has more value to Navy. Ken Niumatalolo’s team is tied for first in the West Division of the American Athletic Conference and angling to be the best Group of 5 team to claim a New Year’s Day bowl spot. The Fighting Irish are also vying for a New Year’s Day bowl, but also have tie-ins with the ACC to fall back on.

The Middies have been idle since thrashing Connecticut 56-10 on the road Nov. 1, scoring 42 unanswered points. Malcolm Perry accounted for 273 total yards and three touchdowns, guiding a Navy offense that amassed 408 rushing yards and 573 overall. His three completions resulted in a career-high 165 passing yards and marked the fourth time this season he topped 100 passing yards directing the Midshipmen’s option.

Navy leads the nation in rushing at 357.9 yards per game and with 36 touchdowns on the ground. The Midshipmen are also ninth among FBS teams in scoring 40.1 points per game.

Notre Dame has won both its games since getting routed at then-No. 19 Michigan on Oct. 26 and cruised past Duke, 38-7, last Saturday on the road. Ian Book showed off his dual-threat skills, rushing for a career-high 139 yards, while also adding 181 through the air with four touchdown passes.

Book has had underwhelming performances against the three AP Top 25 teams Notre Dame has played this season, completing 55.7 percent of his passes for 513 yards, three TDs and two interceptions, while going 1-2.

Notre Dame still holds a staggering 76-13-1 lead in the all-time series, but including Navy’s 46-44 triple overtime win in 2007, the Midshipmen have won four of the last 12 games. The Irish have won the last two meetings, including a 44-22 romp in San Diego last year, as Book threw for 330 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
