Watch: Pokemon celebrates 20th anniversary with Super Bowl ad
Pokemon is celebrating its 20th anniversary by airing a commercial during the Super Bowl. With the ad being rolled out on the biggest day in sports, it only makes sense to ditch the animated characters you know and love and queue up the generic sporty montage.
For the first 30 seconds of the commercial, you are left thinking that this has to be an ad for Gatorade. Then you get that first flashback to your GameBoy playing days when a football team runs through a locker room door, the phrase “like no one ever was” painted above it.
The commercial finishes by finally getting to the good stuff, a teenager dressed like Ash Ketchum, the start of a Pokemon battle and, of course, a visit from Pikachu.
Does Nintendo want you to buy a new Pokemon game or just be excited that it’s been 20 years since the franchise started? Although that’s far from clear, you get a little Pokemon action to go with your football, and that’s nothing to complain out.
