Kentucky Derby favorite Nyquist had a sip from the Stanley Cup

It’s good to be the Kentucky Derby favorite.

It’s good to be the Kentucky Derby favorite.

Nyquist, the 2–1 betting leader, learned this for his (horse) self on Saturday.

The horse apparently got to drink from the Stanley Cup, a treasured chalice that I honestly probably would not touch with my lips unless I saw it thoroughly cleaned right in front of me, on the morning of the race. For good luck of course.

Update: this writer has learned that Nyquist is named after Red Wings player Gustav Nyquist, and that the horse’s owner has named other horses after other members of the Red Wings. “In 2004, I named a horse Datsyuk, he was a bum.” Word.

Nyquist also has a Twitter account. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t actually run it. Too curated a social media presence. But hey, who knows?

His pony also drank from it. You know, to keep all the other ponys out of his DMs.

The Derby begins at 6:43 p.m. ET.
