Rodriguez will retire and take an organizational role with New York after Friday night’s game at home against the Rays, putting an end to a career that saw him hit 696 home runs, and win three MVP awards while appearing in 2782 games.
On Wednesday night Rodriguez found his way into the lineup as a pinch hitter for the Yankees against the Red Sox, and was greeted by resounding boos from the Boston crowd, as New York defeated its longtime rivals 9–4.
