Making Moves
Trade season is in full swing in fantasy baseball leagues and I've been busy myself, especially in the AL-only Roto-style, weekly moves, 4X4, keeper Sports Illustrated Baseball League. Dealing with many grizzled veteran players, most of whom I've been in the league with for a decade-and-a-half, is never easy. But using some simple principles I was able to transform a team, languishing deep in the standings, into a clear-cut contender. Here's what happened:
1. Trade B.J. Upton for Nick Blackbun, Jarrod Washburn and Jesus Montero
I had steals to burn and a pitching staff with astronomical WHIP and ERAs which since the deal has become one of the league's best with the 'Burns on fire since I picked them up. And Montero is shooting up the Yankees system.
2. Trade Joakim Soria and Kevin Youkilis for David Price and Carlos Quentin
Always in the market to deal away a closer, especially one that can't be kept, I swung a trade for two of the league's best keepers. But this doesn't mean I'm done for the year.
3. Trade Price, Quentin, Scott Kazmir and Kelvim Escobar for Ichiro, Joe Nathan, Jason Varitek
I wasn't ready to throw in the towel so just one week later I was able to secure the league's top hitter, top closer and one of the few productive catchers for basically future considerations.
4. Trade Nelson Cruz, Andrew Bailey, Melky Cabrera and Taylor Teagarden for Chone Figgins, Carlos Pena and Mike Napoli.
In position to contend for the title, it's time to go for broke, dealing a $1 closer (Bailey) and $4 stud (Cruz) for lots of average, speed, and RBIs. In just two weeks my catchers went from Taylor Teagarden and Francisco Cervelli to Varitek and Napoli, both of who were throw ins.
Early Fantasy Hockey Scouting
For those of you who play fantasy hockey, remember the name Colton Poulin. Check him out as he beats Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas like a rented mule.
