GolfThreads: The best fashion at 2020 Colonial
What a wildly entertaining weekend of golf we witnessed at Colonial Country Club. It was really nice to have the PGA Tour return to my living room and I hope you enjoy the season-long return of This Week In Golf Fashion. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger said in The Terminator, “I’ll be back.”
Phil Mickelson
Unlike the aforementioned Terminator, Phil opted for shades a little less futuristic. Lefty’s mirrored aviators reminded me more of Maverick in Top Gun. OK, let’s just get this out of the way; does anyone think that Mickelson has gotten a little more (how do I say this?) eccentric lately? I don’t mean “Tom Cruise jumping up-and-down on Oprah’s couch-eccentric,” but definitely more overtly quirky. You be you, Phil.
Anyone who has read me over the years, knows I hate the color yellow. With that being said, Ian Poulter made this kit work. Fashion tip, if you are going to wear yellow trousers, you must perfectly match them with a yellow belt. Voila. A few years ago, I came up with a bucket list of golfers I’d like to interview about golf fashion. Billy Horschel was number one and I crossed him off my list. Number two? Ian Poulter! The man knows his golf threads.
Rickie Fowler (Puma Golf)
While we are at it; number three on my interview wish-list would be Rickie Fowler. There is so much to love about Rickie and there is so much to love about the Puma X Tipped Golf Polo. It is simple yet sophisticated. This performance shirt features a chic contrast tipping on the collar and cuff, in a Rickie-inspired orange colorway. The X Collection was inspired by Rickie Fowler’s progressive, fashion-forward style and originally launched in 2019 to celebrate Rickie’s 10th anniversary with Puma. Quite a partnership.
Joel Dahmen (Linksoul & TRUE Linkswear)
Joel Dahmen is pretty much dressed like me on any given summer day. Linksoul is my go-to kicking-around-town gear. My go-to summer shoe? You guessed it, the same shoe Joel is wearing, the TRUE Eco Knit. Admittedly, I haven’t worn these on the course yet, however, if they are good enough for a PGA Tour professional, I think I can make them work. I did recently demo the soon-to-be-released TRUE OG Feel while walking 18 and they are the closest thing you’ll come to finding performance golf shoes that feel like your favorite slippers.
Justin Thomas (Polo Golf/RLX & FootJoy)
Holy cow! This Adidas polo is sick! I love how it looked on the back-swing and follow-through. This was my favorite shirt at Colonial. Fun little tidbit from my friends at Adidas Golf; all their athletes wore what they would’ve worn at The Masters had it been played in April. So cool!
Justin Rose (Bonobos)
No one does printed summer polos on the golf course (or Copa) quite like Justin Rose and Bonobos. They are jaunty and beautiful. Of course, Justin continues his whimsical footwear ways, this time lacing up the Adicross Retro Golf Shoes. Leave it to JRose to keep us on our toes with his footwear.
Erik van Rooyen (Greyson Clothiers & ECCO)
(Warning: hyperbole alert–sort of). With everything we saw at Colonial, it might’ve been Erik van Rooyen who stole the show with his Friday ensemble. The Greyson Clothiers Peaks & Parks Polo, Montauk Joggers, and the ECCO Golf Street 10 Shoes transcend golf fashion. Not only is Erik van Rooyen the best dressed guy on Tour, he does a mean cover of Jack Johnson’s Banana Pancakes. Check it out on his Instagram page. It’ll make you smile. Promise.
