Memorial Milkshake: The Tradition. The Legend. A Milky Cup of Heaven.
The first printed usage of “milkshake” was in 1885, however, the term was used to describe an alcoholic whiskey drink. By the turn of the century, milkshakes were no longer alcoholic and were made with flavored syrups, such as chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. In 1922, two separate events led to milkshakes taking their modern form; Steve Poplawski invented the electric blender, and in Chicago, a Walgreens Soda Jerk, Ivan “Pop” Coulson added vanilla ice cream to the very popular malted milk drink, inventing the first malted milkshake. By the 1950s, milkshakes were prevalent in diners, lunch counters, soda foundations, and burger joints across America.
Before Jack Nicklaus was an icon of golf and a superstar on the PGA Tour he was a kid in Columbus, Ohio whose dad owned a couple of pharmacies. Jack’s first job was working as a Soda Jerk for his father during the 1950s; making ... you guessed it, milkshakes!
A few years after Mr. Nicklaus opened the Muirfield Village Golf Club in 1974 he channeled his inner teenager and made a good old-fashioned, all-American milkshake in the grill room. This would soon become the signature item at Muirfield. (The signature flavor? That would be the Buckeye–peanut butter, vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and milk). Indulging in the frosty treat post-round is one of the most popular and talked about activities for the PGA Tour players who participate in Jack’s tournament every year.
So in honor of The Golden Bear and the beautiful game of golf, grab yourself a milkshake, sit back, and enjoy the fashion recap from the Memorial Tournament.
Justin Rose (Bonobos & G/FORE)
It came as no surprise to see Justin Rose wearing a really fun summer Palm Tree print polo by Bonobos. What did catch me off guard was the G/FORE Gallivanter shoes I spied him wearing. Guess I shouldn’t have been so shocked given his whimsical footwear ways ...
Max Homa (TravisMathew and FootJoy)
TravisMathew also knows a thing or two about summery, tropical-themed golf shirts. Max Homa killed it with the all-over palm and parrot print Loose Screws and the palm-leaf print Broken Arrow polos.
However, once again, the real story here was the shoes. The past two weeks I noticed Ian Poulter and Max Homa testing out what my source at FootJoy described as a prototype for a new shoe. Then last week Max Homa revealed on his Instagram story that they are called the FootJoy Premiere and that they are “sick.” Sick, indeed!
Danny Willett (Descente & Puma)
I could wax poetic about Danny Willett’s style. In my mind, he is one of the best-dressed athletes in the game. Danny looks great week in and week out and his fit is always on point. Unfortunately, Descente is nearly impossible to get your hands on here in the U.S. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I am convinced that I would play better wearing their apparel. But, wait a minute! When did he start wearing the Puma Original G Golf Shoes?
Luke List (Greyson Clothiers & Adidas)
... and the footwear shakeup continues. Apparently, Boa OG, Luke List is now lacing up the Adidas TOUR360 XT. I can’t keep this straight anymore. These guys have taken the expression, “walk a mile in my shoes,” literally.
Patrick Rodgers (Oakley & G/FORE)
Patrick Rodgers looked cool, casual, and comfortable on Sunday. I go back and forth on blade collars. However, the Oakley Ergonomic Ellipse Evo Golf Polo worked for me. Especially when paired with the G/FORE MG4+.
Billy Horschel (Ralph Lauren & FootJoy)
Billy Horschel was looking exceptionally nautical in his rope hat and the Ralph Lauren Polo Golf Monaco Sailboats shirt. I noticed that Ralph Lauren offers this same “Monaco Sailboat” print in a pair of navy Links to Beach golf-trunks that double as swimwear. That is pretty cool! It also got me thinking; Billy-Ho is long overdue for a pair of printed trousers….
Tony Finau (Nike)
Tony Finau has a cool look about him. He’s so lanky with a laid-back, easy-going style that appears to fit his personality. The head designer at Nike Golf once told me that he was her favorite golfer to work with because he was such a great guy and isn’t afraid to take fashion risks. I really like the front paneling on his Nike AeroBill Legacy91 hat as well as his Janoski G shoes.
Tiger Woods (Nike)
Finally, in case you didn’t hear, Tiger Woods made his return at The Memorial Tournament. This was my favorite look from the Big Cat at Muirfield. Now it REALLY would’ve been a shakeup if Tiger showed up in shoes other than Nike.
