Former Masters Champion Ángel Cabrera to Be Released from 30-Month Prison Sentence

Ángel Cabrera, the two-time major champion from Argentina, will reportedly be released from prison after spending more than 30 months behind bars.

Per Golf Digest, Cabrera will be released on Friday from Monte Cristo, a minimum-security prison in Cordoba, Argentina.

“I just want to go home, be with my family and start a new phase of my life,” Cabrera said to Golf Digest, speaking through his manager Manuel Tagle.

The 2009 Masters champion served consecutive sentences in three different prison facilities for domestic violence and assault as well as other charges.

Cabrera was first taken into custody in January of 2021. In August of 2020, Cabrera had left Argentina to attend the Senior Players Championship before a mandated court appearance. When he finally returned to South America, he was tracked down by federal officers in Brazil and later extradited to Argentina.

In 2021, Cabrera was officially sentenced to two years in prison for the assault of Cecilia Torres Mana, his former partner. Then, in 2022, Cabrera was given an additional 28 months of prison time for the assault of Micaela Escudero, another former partner.

He served both sentences concurrently.

Some 18 months of Cabrera’s sentence were spent in Carcel de Bouwer, a facility notorious for holding violent and dangerous criminals.

He was eventually transferred to Monte Cristo, where he will be released on Friday, after participating in therapy and demonstrating good conduct.
