Golf News: PGA Tour looks at larger fields, more doubleheaders
Reported: By GolfChannel.com’s Rex Hoggard, that the PGA Tour will expand the field size at tournaments upon returning to action later this year. The report, citing a Tour memo sent to players, said the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Memorial Tournament will be expanded from 120 to 144 players. Larger field sizes in other tournaments also are under discussion, and the Tour is looking at the possibility of more opposite-field tournaments. Because of the desire to create more playing opportunities for Tour members in the abbreviated season, the new pace-of-play policy, which was set to take effect later this month at the since-canceled RBC Heritage, will be postponed until next season. The Tour has been idle since March 12 because of the coronavirus pandemic, with no tournament scheduled until the Charles Schwab Challenge on May 21-24 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. If the Tour restarts play in late May, 11 events will have been postponed or canceled. The season’s first two major championships, the Masters and the PGA, are expected to be rescheduled in the fall.
