Golf News: Date, time, site set for Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson match

Set: By Turner Sports via a news release, a date and site for the match between Tiger Woods and partner Peyton Manning against Phil Mickelson and teammate Tom Brady. Dubbed as “The Match: Champions for Charity,” the exhibition will be played Sunday, May 24, in Hobe Sound, Fla., at Medalist Golf Club, where Woods frequently practices. Proceeds will benefit coronavirus relief. The format will be four-ball, or better ball, on the front nine and a modified alternate shot on the back nine, with each player hitting a tee shot and then the team playing alternate shot until the ball is holed. The match will be simulcast on TNT, TBS, TruTV and HLN at 3 p.m. EDT, with pre-match coverage on Bleacher Report’s app. Woods and Mickelson played a winner-take-all $9 million match on Thanksgiving weekend 2018, with Mickelson winning on the fourth extra hole. Billed as “The Match,” the showdown between golf’s two biggest stars of the past quarter century failed to live up to its hype and was widely panned as being dull. This time, “The Match II” turned to two NFL legends to boost interest. Manning, a two-time Super Bowl-champion quarterback with the Colts and Broncos, is a frequent pro-am partner of Woods’. Brady won a record six Super Bowl titles as the Patriots’ quarterback before signing recently with the Bucs. The exhibition will be played one week after another high-profile match-play event in southeast Florida pitting Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach. Both exhibitions will lean on some of golf's biggest stars to benefit coronavirus-relief efforts and help ease the sport out of a 2½-month competitive suspension The PGA Tour halted play March 12 after the first round of the Players Championship. The Tour is scheduled to resume tournament play on June 11 at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.
