Golf news: Florida man dies after shooting his age 1,464 times

Sidney Beckwith, 101, first shot his age at 72, Golfweek reports

1,464: Number of times that Sidney Beckwith of Clermont, Fla., shot his age, according to a report by Golfweek’s Adam Schupak. Beckwith, 101, died May 9 in Summerfield, Fla. Beckwith, a native of New Haven, Conn., was raised on Long Island, where he learned the game as a caddie, before serving in the Army during World War II. He worked for 26 years in the Health Department in Suffolk County, N.Y., before retiring at age 57, so that he and his wife could tour the country before settling in Florida. In recent years, he played at Green Valley Country Club in Clermont, just west of Orlando, and spent winters at Gardiner’s Bay Country Club on Long Island. He was 72 when he first broke his age at Green Valley. As a 98-year-old, he shot his age more than 100 times. He played his last round on Thanksgiving Day. The record for the most times a golfer has shot his age is believed to be held by the late Thomas Edison Smith of Moorhead, Minn., who accomplished the feat 3,359 times before his death in 2011, according to his obituary.
