Golf news: Foreign players on PGA Tour, LPGA catch a break from U.S.
Granted: By the Department of Homeland Security, exemptions for foreign professional athletes, including golfers, to re-enter the U.S. amid tighter travel restrictions to halt coronavirus transmission. Chad F. Wolf, the department’s acting secretary, signed an order Friday stating that it is in the national interest to accept foreign nationals who compete in organized leagues. The PGA Tour and LPGA Tour were among the major professional sports leagues listed for the exemptions. “Professional sporting events provide much needed economic benefits, but equally important, they provide community pride and national unity,” Wolf wrote. “In today’s environment, Americans need their sports. It’s time to reopen the economy and it’s time we get our professional athletes back to work.” Australia’s Adam Scott and Englishmen Tommy Fleetwood and Lee Westwood have been outspoken about their reluctance to face the mandatory federal 14-day quarantine requirements upon returning to the U.S. next month when the PGA Tour resumes play.
