Golf news: Porter Cup joins list of amateur cancellations because of coronavirus
Canceled: The Porter Cup, one of the premier tournaments of the summer amateur season, organizers announced via Twitter on Friday, citing complications from the coronavirus pandemic. The tournament had been scheduled for July 22-25 at Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston, N.Y. This will be the first year that the Porter Cup is not played since its founding in 1959. The Porter Cup boasts a who’s who roster of winners, including future PGA Tour winners Deane Beman, Ben Crenshaw, David Duval, Brian Harman, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Rodgers and Scott Verplank, and typically attracts the top amateurs in the world to western New York. The Women’s Porter Cup, which had been scheduled for June 3-5, had been canceled earlier. The Senior Porter Cup remains scheduled for Sept. 2-4. The Porter Cup news follows the USGA’s recent cancellation of most of its junior and amateur events, plus the recent scrapping of the Northeast Amateur, casting further doubt on the amateur season. The Sunnehanna Amateur, the first big amateur event of the season, remains scheduled for June 17-20 at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa.
