2020 RBC Heritage: Latest betting odds, favorites, sleepers

The PGA Tour is back, but the much-anticipated return of Tiger Woods will have to wait at least another week (and quite likely until next month’s Memorial).
The field for this week’s RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, S.C., will include the first winner since the three-month season shutdown from the coronavirus pandemic. Daniel Berger, who was listed Monday as a 40-1 pick to win this week, held off Collin Morikawa (25-1) in a playoff Sunday in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
This week, unlike during the RBC Heritage’s traditional April slot in the week after the Masters, the annual stop in the South Carolina Lowcountry will feature a loaded roster. Once again, the top five in the Official World Golf Ranking will compete.
World No. 1 Rory McIlroy, despite fading into a tie for 32nd after a final-round 74 at Colonial, remained the betting favorite for the RBC Heritage. According to British oddsmaker William Hill, Northern Ireland’s McIlroy was listed at 11-1 to win in his first start at Harbour Town Golf Links since 2009. Americans Bryson DeChambeau (16-1) and Justin Thomas were listed as 16-1 co-second picks. DeChambeau, who finished one stroke out of the playoff Sunday, spent much of his quarantine time in the weight room as he marveled golf fans last week with his bigger physique and 5.5-degree driver. Jon Rahm, ranked No. 2 in the world, was bettors’ fourth pick at 18-1. American Xander Schauffele, who also finished one stroke out of a playoff at Colonial after a horseshoe lip-out on the 71st hole, was a 20-1 pick for Harbour Town.
Some insight for bettors to consider:
· Harbour Town, much like Colonial, rewards precision, so the players with strong short games and excellent ball-striking should have an advantage.
· Accuracy will be a much higher priority than length off the tee.
Among the favorites, DeChambeau and Thomas get our attention. While DeChambeau ranks only 122nd on Tour in driving accuracy this season, his added bulk has helped him top the Tour in driving distance (321.3 yards) and rank third in strokes gained off the tee (1.009). Thomas has been steady all year, with six top-10s in nine starts, including victories at the CJ Cup and the Tournament of Champions as he ranks second in the FedEx Cup standings.
For a sleeper, Webb Simpson is one of the game’s top players but feels like a value at 30-1. He has not performed well in his past couple of events, but he won the Phoenix Open in February and has not finished outside of the top 16 at Harbour Town in his past three trips. Look for the North Carolinian to feel at home this week.
