LPGA borrows page from PGA Tour with Ohio doubleheader
Borrowed: By the LPGA, a page from the PGA Tour’s playbook next month as the women's tour will hold tournaments in two consecutive weeks in the same market in Ohio, the LPGA announced Tuesday in a news release updating a revised schedule. The Marathon LPGA Classic, which had been scheduled to restart the tour’s season July 23-26, will move to Aug. 6-9. It still will be played at Highland Meadows in Sylvania in northwest Ohio. Now, the season restart will be held July 31-Aug. 2 with the LPGA Drive On Championship at Toledo's Inverness Club, the site of the 2021 Solheim Cup. The 54-hole, $1 million event will be held without sponsors, pro-ams or spectators, the LPGA said. The $2 million Marathon LPGA Classic will occupy the week that became open when the Evian Championship recently was canceled because of concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic in France. The PGA Tour will take a similar approach next month in the Columbus area, though the two consecutive events will be played at the same club. The inaugural Workday Charity Open will be held July 9-12 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, without spectators, followed the next week by the Memorial Tournament, which is scheduled to be the Tour’s first event with fans.
