Tiger Woods will return to PGA Tour next week at Memorial

Woods, who has not competed in a Tour event since February and hasn't played in public since a charity match May 24, will return at a Muirfield Village Golf Club course where he has won 5 times

Tiger Woods will return to competition next week at the Memorial Tournament, he announced Thursday on Twitter.

Woods has not competed in a PGA Tour event since he shot 76-77 on the weekend to fade to 68th, last place among those who made the cut, at the Genesis Invitational in February. He teamed with former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning to defeat rival Phil Mickelson and NFL star Tom Brady on May 24 in The Match: Champions for Charity, a made-for-TV exhibition that raised $20 million for coronavirus relief.

Woods will return to the Tour at a Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, where he has enjoyed tremendous success over the years. He has won the Memorial Tournament five times, most recently in 2012. This week, the PGA Tour is playing the first of two consecutive events at Muirfield Village with the inaugural Workday Charity Open.

Woods, 44, will be the defending champion in the Masters, which was moved to November as part of the PGA Tour’s revised schedule in the wake of a three-month suspension in play because of COVID-19. He is tied with Sam Snead for the all-time victory mark on the PGA Tour, with 82.

The first major championship of the season will be three weeks after the Memorial when the PGA Championship is held Aug. 6-9 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

Woods, who was No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking for a record 683 weeks from 1997 to 2014, started 2020 at No. 6 in the world order but has slipped to 14th.
