2020 Memorial Tournament: Latest betting odds, favorites and sleeper picks for Muirfield Village Golf Club
We got off to a hot start in our two-week stint at Jack’s place in Dublin, Ohio. Although we did not hit on a winner last week, we collected three more top-10s in Patrick Cantlay (16-1), Viktor Hovland (22-1) and Kevin Streelman (70-1). Hovland came the closest to the winner’s circle in the Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village, but his putter fizzled on the back nine and he finished third as Collin Morikawa (22-1) and Justin Thomas (11-1) to eventually duel it out in a three-hole playoff. Morikawa ultimately held on for his second PGA Tour victory, extending a dazzlingly good start to his pro career, which now includes more wins (two) than missed cuts (one) in little more than a year.
With the Memorial Tournament on deck, the field will be smaller at 133 players, but should offer a more star-studded punch for the more prestigious annual tournament at Muirfield. Many of the world’s top players will be in the field, but none more notable Tiger Woods (28-1). It’s his first start since hosting the Genesis Invitational at Riviera in February, so he will look to build some momentum heading into the PGA Championship next month at TPC Harding Park.
According to U.K. bookmaker William Hill, Bryson DeChambeau has hulked his way to the pole position this week at 10-1. After Sunday’s heartbreak, Thomas comes in at 11-1. Next is Rory McIlroy, world No. 1, at 14-1, and then Patrick Cantlay, the 2019 champion, and Dustin Johnson, the recent Travelers champion, both at 16-1.
Among the favorites, we are going to run it back with Cantlay (16-1). He offers the most value out of the top contenders and probably will have the clearest mindset going in. Cantlay, who closed with a 65 on Sunday to move up to a T-7, is rounding into championship form, so we are going to ride his momentum.
We won’t call this next pick a sleeper because, by definition, the best to lace up the golf shoes simply cannot be. However, Woods, at 28-1, offers great value for the five-time Memorial winner. While he has not played in a PGA Tour event in five months, he has shown during his time off – notably at The Match: Champions for Charity – that his game is close to where it needs to be heading into the busy months.
An actual sleeper for this week is Mexico’s Abraham Ancer, at 50-1. Remember him? With so many rising young stars on the PGA Tour, a 29-year-old such as Ancer can get lost in the crowd. But with four top-10s this season, including a runner-up at Harbor Town, and a 3-1-1 record against the Americans in the Presidents Cup, he has posted perhaps the best season yet for a non-winner. After a two-week break, Ancer has the tee-to-green game to win.
