2020 Memorial: Viewer’s guide, TV times, how to watch

For the second time in as many weeks, the PGA Tour’s best players will be tested at Jack’s Place, aka Muirfield Village Golf Club, in Dublin, Ohio. Last week in the inaugural Workday Charity Open, Collin Morikawa overcame a three-stroke deficit on the final three holes and beat Justin Thomas in a playoff. This week, the Tour’s big guns will return. The Memorial Tournament will feature nine of the top 10 players in the world and the eagerly awaited return to competition of five-time Memorial champion Tiger Woods.

Spectators were supposed to have been welcomed back to Tour this week in the sixth tournament since the season restarted after a three-month suspension during the coronavirus pandemic. However, with infections spiking in Ohio in recent weeks, Memorial officials extended the Tour’s ban on fans. On Monday, that ban was added for the rest of the 2019-20 season, through the Tour Championship.

For now, golf fans can get comfortable on their couches and look forward to elongated segments with tournament host Jack Nicklaus and CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz discussing players, the course, and Memorial’s signature milkshakes. The course will be turned up a notched this week, with longer rough and green speeds quickening from 11 on the Stimpmeter to a more treacherous 13-plus feet.

Weather delays have been routine with the Memorial over the years, but the tournament usually is played in late May/early June, two weeks before the U.S. Open, often under spring rains. This year, with the Tour’s revised schedule in the wake of so many tournament cancellations, the weather pattern should be more summerlike. Nonetheless, weather played a factor in Sunday’s final round at the Workday, with tee times moved forward in anticipation of afternoon storms, and players competing in threesomes instead of the usual weekend two-balls. The final round, with its riveting playoff, was shown mostly online and then tape-delayed in its usual afternoon time slot on CBS.
