Tiger Woods rounds out stacked Northern Trust field
Tiger Woods committed to play in this week’s Northern Trust, the PGA Tour’s first of three playoff tournaments, he announced Friday on his Twitter account.
With Woods, the tournament field will feature the entire top 125 of the FedEx Cup standings. Play begins Thursday at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass.
Woods, who won the season-long FedEx Cup title in 2007 and 2009, and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019) are the only two-time winners of the Tour’s big-money yearly bonus. Woods, who is No. 47 in the season standings and No. 16 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is attempting to win a record 83rd PGA Tour title. He is tied with the late Sam Snead for the all-time lead.
Woods made his last appearance two weeks ago in the PGA Championship, in which he tied for 37th at TPC Harding Park. In his only other tournament since the season restarted in early June, Woods tied for 40th in the Memorial five weeks ago. Without a very high finish this week, Woods would need to play next week’s BMW Championship at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club in order to have a shot at the top 30 and a spot at the season-ending Tour Championship on Sept. 4-7 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
Woods has not played in back-to-back weeks since February 2019, when he competed in the Genesis Invitational, which benefits his Tiger Woods Foundation, and the next week’s WGC Mexico Championship. He hasn’t competed in three consecutive weeks since the 2018 PGA Tour playoffs, which came in the middle of an exceptionally busy stretch during which he played seven tournaments in a 10-week span.
