Phil Mickelson to make Champions Tour debut Monday
Phil Mickelson won’t be idle for long after having been bounced from the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Mickelson, who turned 50 on June 16, will make his Champions Tour debut at the Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National, which begins Monday in Hollister, Mo. He will be paired with fellow American Steve Stricker, who will captain the 2021 Ryder Cup team, and South Africa’s Retief Goosen at 2:20 p.m. CDT off the first tee at Ozarks National Golf Course (tee times).
"I've been playing well and I want to play," he said on Twitter. “I wish I was playing in Chicago next week but excited to play my first Champions event."
Mickelson shot 74-68 for an even-par 142 in the Northern Trust at TPC Boston, missing the cut Friday (scores). As a result, he did not qualify among the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings for this week’s BMW Championship, the second of three playoff events, which begins Thursday at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club. After the BMW, the top 30 will advance to the Tour Championship next week at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club.
Mickelson has played inconsistently in the 2019-20 season, having made nine cuts in 16 starts on the PGA Tour. He stood No. 52 in the Official World Golf Ranking entering play at TPC Boston. Mickelson contended in two tournaments, finishing third at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and tied for second at the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He has won 44 times on the PGA Tour, most recently in 2019 at Pebble Beach.
He is expected to play the PGA Tour’s 2020-21 season opener, the Safeway Open on Sept. 10-14, before the following week’s U.S. Open at Winged Foot.
